Let me start off this week’s newsletter with an apology: I’m sorry to keep you all waiting so long for the next chapter in “Alternaversity.” I’d hoped to have the final book in the Horrible Bag series wrapped up by now but life, as it sometimes does, has gotten in my way.

Thank you all for your continued patience. As a reward for sticking around, I’m going to share something that I’ve never shared publicly before: the original My Life as a Teenage Robot show bible.

A show bible is a sales tool that creators use to sell shows to network executives. If they are lucky enough to actually make the show they pitch, the creator might also show it to the crew, as I did, to get them acquainted with the show they intend to make.

I say “intend” because the show you actually do make will inevitably end up diverging from the bible in myriad ways both big and small. You can see an example of this in the very first sentence of Jenny’s character description. As you all know, she is not the “first and only” robot that Dr. Wakeman created to protect the world. But my first story editor Mike Bell came up with the idea for Jenny’s sisters when we were actually making the show, long after this document was produced.

I wrote the show bible as if it were an Owner's Manual to change things up for the execs, who read a lot of these things. You’ll see that the formatting on the Table of Contents is screwed up and that I’ve cropped a couple of early pages that were mostly blank, but nothing has been edited out. You’ll see everything I wrote in the next few newsletters. Enjoy!
